A DIY Rolling Storage Cabinet

A rolling storage cabinet needs to have a wide enough base to provide stability when the cabinet is moved, especially once the cabinet becomes filled with heavy items. Building your own storage cabinet allows you to customize the dimensions to fit the space and include as much shelving as desired. Larger shelves should always be apportioned for the bottom of the cabinet, to further increase stability and keep the smaller shelves and lighter items near the top of the cabinet. Wheels on the base of the cabinet allows for easy transitions between storage locations.

Instructions

    • 1

Arrange four 1/2-by-24-by-36-inch side boards in a perfect 36 1/2-by-36 1/2-inch square, so that each board butts up against the side of another board. Use the drill to make three holes in the side of each board so that the holes go through the board and into the end of the board that butts up against it. Set a 2-inch wood screw in each hole, and use the drill to tighten the screw until the head of the screw is flush with the surface of the board.

    • 2

Set a 1/2-by-36 1/2-by-36 1/2-inch board, which will be the rear of the cabinet, on top of the framed boards, arranging it so that its outside edge is even with the outside edges of the assembled boards. Drill holes every eight inches around the edge of the rear board and into the adjoining board. Set 2-inch wood screws into the holes, and tighten them completely.

    • 3

Flip the cabinet around so that the bottom of the cabinet is facing upward. Predrill a hole in each corner of the cabinet using a drill bit the same size as the diameter of the swivel wheel threads. Set a swivel wheel in each hole, and hand-tighten the wheel until it is completely installed. Repeat for the other wheels, making sure that all four wheels are tightened to an even depth.

Set the cabinet on its wheels, and position another 1/2-by-36 1/2-by-36 1/2-inch board on the front of the cabinet in the door position. Open the board as if it were already installed as the door, and position two hinges evenly between the door and the cabinet. Mark the locations of the hinge's screw holes on the door and cabinet. Remove the door, and drill holes into each marked location. Secure the hinges to the door and cabinet by passing 1/2-inch wood screws through the hinges and the holes and tightening them completely.

Position a 1/2-by-24-by-35 1/2-inch shelf board within the cabinet. Mark the location of the shelf on both side boards. Remove the shelf board, and drill two holes in each side board at the level of the marking. Insert pegs in the holes, and place the shelf board on top of the pegs.
