DIY Contemporary Vanity

One of the recent trends for contemporary bathroom vanities is to position the vanity against the wall with no support from the ground to give the illusion of floating in midair. No knobs and a high-gloss coat of solid-colored paint further the image of something sleek, modern and unexpected. This design can be altered to fit any dimension of plumbing and sink shape necessary and can also be doubled in width to accommodate a double sink vanity bathroom. Attaching the vanity to the wall makes cleanup easier and gives the entire room a modern sense of clean.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand up two 1/2-by-18-by-32 inch boards, which will be the sides, on their smallest ends, parallel to each other and 2 feet apart. Set a 1/2-by-18-by-24 inch board, which will be the top, on top of the side boards and arrange the boards so their sides are even. Use a drill and a drill bit slightly smaller in diameter than the wood screws to make holes through the top board and into the side boards. Fasten the boards together securely with 2-inch wood screws drilled through the holes. Repeat the process on the other side with another 1/2-by-18-by-24 inch board for the bottom of the vanity.

Turn the vanity so it is face down on the working surface. Position a board on top of it which is 1/2-by-24-by-33 inches, which will be the rear board. Align the sides so they all line up smoothly, and make holes around the perimeter of the rear board and into the other boards every 8 inches. Use 2-inch wood screws to securely fasten the boards together.

Flip the vanity over so its open section is facing up. Position another 1/2-by-24-by-33 inch board for the door over the open section. Open the door as if it were attached and position two hinges on the interior, evenly spaced. Mark the locations of the hinge screw attachment holes and remove the door. Drill through the holes on both door and vanity, being careful not to penetrate the outer surface of the door. Attach the hinges to the door and vanity with 1/2-inch wood screws.

Use a stud finder around the sink plumbing and mark the locations of the studs. Hold the vanity against the wall, and mark the location of plumbing. Cut out any sections of the rear of the vanity that interfere with the plumbing. Hold the vanity against the wall and set a carpenter's level on top of the vanity. Adjust the vanity until it is level, then drill four evenly spaced holes through the back of the vanity and into the wall studs. Pass four 3-inch wood screws through washers and use them to attach the vanity to the wall.
