DIY Bathroom Corner Cabinet & Shelf Wall Unit

A corner cabinet and shelf wall unit works well for a small bathroom. This type of cabinet takes up little space because it is installed in the corner and it incorporates both open and enclosed storage space. Building your own bathroom cabinet is a project that the average homeowner can complete in a few hours. After drawing up a sketch of your design you will need to construct the frame then install the cabinet in the desired location.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height of the wall in your bathroom, using a measuring tape. You will be building your corner cabinet to the same height as the wall, using 1-by-10-inch boards.

    • 2

Use a stud finder to locate the studs in the wall where you intend to install your cabinet. Mark the position of the studs lightly on the wall in pencil.

    • 3

Cut two sheets of 1-by-10-inch pine to the height of the cabinet, using a circular saw. Stand these two boards upright against the walls adjacent to the corner where you plan to install your cabinet. Slide the boards together so their back edges are just touching, forming a 90-degree angle in the corner.

    • 4

Drive 2-inch wood screws through the 1-by-10-inch boards into the wall studs. These boards will serve as the side panels for your cabinet.

    • 5

Measure the distance between the two side panels you attached to the wall to determine the width of your top panel, bottom panel and cabinet shelves. Use a metal triangle template to mark your cut lines for these panels on sheets of 1-inch pine. Two sides of the triangle should be 10 inches in length, meeting at a 90-degree angle. The third side of the triangle should be equal to the width between the side panels you just measured.

    • 6

Use the circular saw to cut the top panel, bottom panel and shelves for your corner cabinet out of 1-inch pine. The panels and shelves should be identical in size and shape. The cuts on all three sides should be straight so the edges of the shelves will lie flush against the cabinet frame.

    • 7

Lay the bottom panel flat on the ground and slide it into the corner formed by the two side panels. Drive nails from a nail gun at a downward angle through the top of the bottom panel into the side panels. This process is called toe-nailing.

    • 8

Install the top panel using the same procedure, positioning it so it is flat against the ceiling and the edges flush with the side panels. Drive the nails at an upward angle through the top panel into the ceiling.

    • 9

Measure and mark the positions for your shelves along the side panels of the cabinet. Slide the shelves into place and attach them by toe-nailing nails through the top of the shelves into the side panels.

    • 10

Cut a sheet of 1-inch pine to the height of the space and the width of the cabinet between the front edges of the side panels to use as the cabinet door for your enclosed storage space, using a circular saw. Install two metal hinges along one side of the door, about 1 inch from each corner, and screw the other side of each hinge into the cabinet frame.

Paint or stain your finished corner cabinet and wall shelf unit. Once the cabinet has dried completely, apply one or more coats of clear varnish or polyurethane to protect the surface of the cabinet from water damage.
