DIY Whoopie Hammock Sling

A whoopie sling is a rope with an adjustable loop, useful in many contexts, but becoming increasingly popular for hanging hammocks. The sling is made out of an ordinary braided cord that is back spliced and buried in itself to create a small fixed eye at one end and a larger adjustable loop along its length.

Things You'll Need

  • Wire, 20 inches long
  • 2mm polyethylene cord, 156 inches long
  • Tape
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape

Instructions

    • 1

Bend a 20-inch piece of wire in half and tape the ends together. Cut a length of cord 156 inches long. Insert the bend of the wire between the strands at a distance of 10 1/3 inches from the working end. Push the wire through the center of the cord, with an equal number of strands on either side of it.

    • 2

Secure the very tip of the working end in the bend of the wire. Pull the wire back out through the cord, drawing the working end after it and creating a loop. Release the working end and push the wire through the cord again 3 1/3 inches from it. Catch the standing end and pull it through as before, until a figure-eight shape results.

Tug on the working end and the further loop until the second loop shrinks away, resulting in a single, larger loop. Insert the wire into the cord 4 inches below the base of the loop, this time pushing it up through the center of the cord's length until it emerges at the loop's base.

Secure the working end in the bend of the wire and pull it down through the center of the cord, burying it in the cord's length. The loop on this end will be the whoopie sling's fixed eye.

Release the working end. Insert the wire into the cord just below the buried working end, pushing it down through the cord's center toward the standing end. Let the wire emerge 5 3/4 inches below the working end. Secure the standing end in the bend. Pull the standing end up through the cord and out to create the adjustable loop.

Pull the standing end of the rope through itself to a depth of 4 inches to finish. Back splice the tail to make the tip thick enough so it will not pull out of the loop made during the previous step.
