DIY Small Cabinet for Toys

Larger toys are easily stored in a toybox or closet, but smaller ones have a tendency to get lost unless they are stored in a special place. You can build a small cabinet for your child's toys, providing a storage place that is safe and secure. This cabinet is essentially a box with shelves, and can be constructed using materials from your local hardware store. Many stores cut the wood for an additional fee, so all you have to do is assemble them into a cabinet.

Instructions

    • 1

Assemble two 2-foot pieces of 1-by-6-inch board and two 18-inch pieces into a box, with the shorter pieces sandwiched between the longer ones.

    • 2

Apply a bead of wood glue along the joints, then clamp the box together with bar clamps. Wipe off any excess wood glue with a paper towel.

    • 3

Hammer three 4d finishing nails into each corner joint, then allow the glue to dry.

    • 4

Place two or three additional 18-inch pieces of 1-by-6-inch board into the box to serve as shelves. Position them within the box as desired, then glue and nail them in place. Allow the glue to dry.

    • 5

Place a 24-by-19 1/2-inch sheet of 1/4-inch plywood onto the completed cabinet frame.

    • 6

Glue the plywood in place, then hammer 4d finishing nails every 3 inches into the box and the shelves. Allow the glue to dry.

    • 7

Glue an 18-inch wood strip on the top of each shelf, lined up with the front edge. These will create a lip on each shelf that helps to prevent small toys from rolling out of the cabinet. Clamp the strips in place and allow the glue to dry.

    • 8

Place a 24-by-19 1/2-inch sheet of 1/2-inch plywood onto the cabinet. This is the cabinet door.

    • 9

Screw two small hinges along one of the 24-inch sides of the door and cabinet side. Decorative hinges are often sold with screws included.

    • 10

Screw a knob with a 1/2-inch attached screw into the face of the door, along the opposite edge as the hinges.

    • 11

Use a stud finder to locate two side-by-side wall studs in your wall. Mark their locations with a pencil.

    • 12

Hold the cabinet frame on the wall, using a level to ensure the top and bottom are perfectly horizontal. The two studs should be centered within the cabinet's width.

    • 13

Drill two one-sixteenth of an inch pilot holes through the back of the cabinet and into each wall stud, one positioned near the top of the cabinet and one near the bottom. There will be four pilot holes total.

    • 14

Screw the cabinet to the wall through the pilot holes, using four 3-inch wood screws.
