How to Build a Windowpane Storage Box

Old farmhouse windowpanes make excellent artistic accents, and an excellent way to utilize this look is to incorporate this type of windowpane into a storage box. Standard plywood makes the most practical material for the construction of this box, which can be painted or stained to achieve any final appearance.

Instructions

    • 1

Set two 1/2-by-36-by-36-inch boards parallel to each other, using an assistant to hold the boards up on one of their long, thin edges. Consider these boards the side boards of the storage box. Set another 1/2-by-36-by-36-inch board against the two parallel boards and consider it the rear board. Drill holes every six inches through the rear board and into the side boards. Set 2-inch screws in each hole and tighten them to fasten the boards together.

    • 2

Set a 1-by-36-by-36-inch window pane against the other end of the side boards. Drill holes every six inches through the window pane edge, being very careful not to break the glass contained within the pane. Set 2-inch screws within the holes and attach the pane to the side boards securely.

Position a 1/2-by-36-by-37-inch board on top of the open square frame. Move this board, which is the bottom board, until the edges are even with the edges of the frame. Drill holes every twelve inches into the bottom board and down through the frame boards, paying special care not to drill into the glass of the window pane. Set 2-inch screws in the holes and tighten the boards together, using shorter screws if necessary for the window pane side.

Flip the box upside down and set another 1/2-by-36-by-37-inch board against the frame. Slide the piano hinge against the side opposite of the window pane. Mark the location of the piano hinge holes. Drill out the holes and screw the piano hinge to the board and the sides with 1/2-inch screws.
