How to Make a Bowl Rack Out of a Pallet

Some bowls are just too pretty to use for serving or eating. These bowls make bright and alluring displays when placed in wall-mounted bowl racks. Instead of investing money in a retail rack, construct one from a wood pallet. A 48-by-40-inch stringer or warehouse pallet is the most common pallet used in the United States. This pallet has seven top deck boards, two side "stringer" boards, a center bottom support board and bottom deck boards. Pallet wood is sturdy and economical, making it an excellent option for the frugal decorator.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a wood pallet for your project. Wood platforms aid in the transportation and storage of goods. You can find wood pallets at stores that sell electronic goods, furniture or home improvement supplies. Often these places will give you a pallet for no charge. Many pallet distributors sell pallets online.

Remove any nails or staples that are sticking up by using a screwdriver and a hammer.

    • 3

Place the pallet on a flat surface. Cut the pallet vertically after the second top deck board from one end by using a handsaw. Repeat this on the other end if you want to make two bowl racks.

    • 4

Measure the length of the opening at the bottom of the bowl rack. Cut pieces of 1-by-4-inch scrap lumber to fit in the opening by using a handsaw. This will form a bottom for the rack.

    • 5

Attach the 1-by-4-inch scrap to the bottom by nailing it with 1 1/4-inch nails through the pallet side. Space nails out evenly every 2 inches along the side of the rack.

    • 6

Nail down any other loose pallet pieces using 1 1/4-inch nails.

    • 7

Paint or stain the shelf to match your existing decor. Let the stain dry completely.

    • 8

Set the plate rack on a mantel or shelf. Place the bowls inside of the rack to complete the display.
