How To Make a Workbench Using a Shelving Rack

The most important item in every carpenter's workshop is the workbench. This is a place to organize commonly used tools, draw designs and fabricate small-to-medium-size items. Workbenches range from very simple to large and complex, depending on the user's needs. A shelving rack serves as a foundation for a workbench that even an amateur can make.

Select a shelving rack that fits the space the workbench is to occupy. Since this item is hard to move, it is built in place. Identify the shelf to be used as the base for the workbench. Design a workbench piece to attach to the front of one of the shelves at slightly higher than waist level. Make the design match the styling of the shelving rack.

Select a wood that matches the shelving rack. Cut wood beams to the correct height and length to make a frame to support the workbench, and merge with the existing shelving rack. The shelving rack stands behind the new piece. Nail the beams together, creating a simple, rectangular frame. Nail a sheet of wood to the top of the frame to serve as the workbench.

Place the workbench piece in front of the shelving rack and fasten it to one shelf using the brackets. Sand and finish the workbench to your liking, attempting to match the shelving rack as much as possible.
