How to Make a Bamboo Hammock Stand

A lack of conveniently-situated trees does not preclude a summer afternoon spent catching rays in your hammock. If you can't hang your hammock between trees or other pre-existing posts, a hammock stand can serve the same purpose. Bamboo hammock stands are surprisingly simple to construct and can support just as much weight as those made of wood, while weighing much less and holding up to the elements better than their lumber counterparts.

Things You'll Need

  • 4 8-foot bamboo rods
  • 2 6-foot bamboo rods
  • 6 4-foot bamboo rods
  • Hammer
  • Nails
  • Twine
  • Sharp blade

Instructions

    • 1

Lay two 8-foot bamboo rods on the ground, parallel with 2 feet between. Lay two 6-foot rods diagonally on top of them angled outward at a 30-degree angle from parallel, both crossing the one eight-foot rod and flush with the further edge of the other. The diagonal rods should be far enough apart that their more distant ends have as much space between them as the length of your hammock. These diagonals will be the hammock-bearing poles.

    • 2

Lay two more eight-foot rods directly on top of the first two, sandwiching the hammock-bearing poles. Drive a nail through each intersection and lash the joints with twine for added strength.

    • 3

Lay two 4-foot bamboo poles parallel at a distance of nearly 8 feet. These will serve as the feet -- horizontal supports along the ground to prevent the finished hammock base from tipping over. Stand the frame vertically, with the hammock-bearing rods pointing up, perpendicular to the feet, crossing both of them. Nail and lash the foot pieces to the upright structure.

    • 4

Nail and lash four more 4-foot rods diagonally between the foot rods and the outward-angled rods for added support. These should be positioned at 45-degree angles, with one end just crossing the 6-foot rods and the other positioned beside the horizontal 4-foot rod. The supports will further solidify the connection between the upright hammock-bearing rods and the horizontal feet, preventing the stand from tipping. Notch the hammock-bearing poles slightly near their upper tips and hang your hammock between them.
