How to Change Folding Panels

Folding panels are often used as room dividers and accent pieces, as well as for window shutters and closet doors. When one of the panels becomes damaged, it can interfere with the entire look of the item, requiring you to change out the defective one. To replace a panel in a folding-style room divider, all you need is a screwdriver to safely remove it -- and install a new one -- without damaging the other panels.

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the folding panel that you are changing out, to locate the hinges along its vertical frame. If the panel that you want to change is a center panel, the hinges will be on both sides. End panels have hinges only along one side.

    • 2

Stand the folding panel structure vertically, with the panels folded enough so that you have access to the hinges along the sides. Unscrew the screws from the hinges with a screwdriver, and reserve the hardware pieces for later use. This step releases the single folding panel from the rest of the panels, so it's helpful to have someone else hold onto them as you unscrew the hinges.

    • 3

Collapse the folding panel structure, laying it horizontally on the floor or working surface. Insert the replacement panel at the appropriate location, either lying between two other panels, or on the bottom or top of the stack of panels. Position the replacement panel so that the side with the holes is facing you, lined up with the other panels' holes. Make sure the top of the replacement panel is lined up with the other panels' tops, or else you will be screwing the panel on upside down.

Place the first hinge that you removed flat against the replacement panel and its adjacent panel, with the hinge's holes aligned with the panel holes. Insert a screw through the hinge hole and panel hole, and use a screwdriver to tighten it into place. Continue positioning and tightening the other screws in that hinge, and then work your way through all the hinges needed to attach the replacement panel, until all screws are securely in place.
