Ideas for How to Redo Dresser Knobs

If you're tired of your old dresser and want a new look, replacing the dresser with a new one can be an expensive choice. Far less expensive is switching out the dresser knobs, which can add fresh life to your cabinet. In addition, some dressers allow one knob to be easily replaced with a different knob, letting you change the knob whenever you want. Hardware stores are full of decorative or simple cabinet knobs that can match almost any style -- from metal, glass and wood to porcelain. However, you may not even want knobs for your cabinet, choosing pulls or some other handle instead.

Decide whether you want knobs at all. Another option is to use pulls, which give you more to grab onto. However, the handle sometimes requires a second hole. Also, the knob takes up less space. Many people choose a pull when the door to the room has a pull, while selecting a knob when the door to the room uses a knob.

Browse hardware stores. Look at the knobs carefully and touch them. Get a sense of what knobs you prefer to look at and touch. Knobs made of different materials feel different. Options include polished pewter, brass, stainless steel, plastic and glass. Also, consider how much wear and tear you expect the knobs to get. If you have children who get rambunctious, more expensive knobs that can easily chip may be a poor choice.

Look throughout the home. Does it have a more simplistic or ornate look? Some knobs are intricately carved and have striking colors, while other knobs are simplistic. Minimalistic knobs are considered more modern. However, you may want a more antique-looking style to fit in with your furniture and decor.

Place the new knob into the hole. Fix the new screw in the screw hole. Put the new screw in place. Pull on the knob to see if it is snug. Sometimes, the knob will need retightening to ensure that the knob does not come off when you pull on it.
