DIY Bar Hutch

Building a bar hutch allows you to create a more social atmosphere in your home. The bar hutch gives people a central place to receive food and drinks at parties, to make announcements and even to eat breakfast around while watching the morning news. The bar hutch is constructed from a two-by-four frame with plywood attached to the outside and can be painted or stained to match your design ideas. The construction requires very few materials and only basic, everyday tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay four 48-inch two-by-fours on their large surfaces in a 51 1/2-by-51 1/2-inch square frame. Drill two holes through each board and into the end of the board that adjoins it. Attach the boards together by drilling 5-inch wood screws into each hole. Repeat to create a second frame with the same dimensions.

    • 2

Stand up the two frames with the help of an assistant. Put the frames 16 inches apart. Position a 16-inch two-by-four in between each corner of the frames, with the large surfaces facing to the sides. Drill two holes through each frame and into each end of these short boards. Attach the short boards in place with 3-inch wood screws.

    • 3

Hold a 16-inch two-by-four between the centers of each side of the frame. Attach them in place using the same method.

    • 4

Place a 1/2-by-51 1/2-by-51 1/2-inch plywood sheet against the front of the frame and attach it to the frame with 1 1/2-inch wood screws, spaced every 12 inches into each frame board.

    • 5

Hold a 1/2-by-19 1/2-by-51 1/2-inch plywood board against the left and right sides of the frame. Attach the plywood boards to the frame by drilling in 1 1/2-inch wood screws every 12 inches.

    • 6

Set a bartop board with dimensions of at least 1-by-22-by-53-inch on top of the frame so that it sticks out on the left and right sides evenly, is flush to the rear of the bar hutch and sticks out furthest in the front of the bar hutch. Drill holes every 12 inches up through the interior of the frame and into the bartop, being careful not to break through the top surface. Attach the bartop to the frame with 2-inch wood screws.
