How to Build a Narrow Wine Rack Tower

Wine should always be stored on its side to prevent the cork from drying out and to allow the wine to oxidize. However, not everyone has the room or the need for a large, elaborate wine storage solution. Making your own rack allows you to create a design that suits your requirements and the available space as well as creating a neat and easily accessible way to store your wine.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Ascertain how many wine bottles you wish to store. A shelf-style rack is a simple solution that requires two sides, a top, a bottom and a shelf for each bottle.

    • 2

Purchase sufficient Medium Density Fiberboard, MDF, to build the rack. The height depends on how many bottles you will be storing. The depth should be a minimum of 10 inches to support the bottles; the width should be approximately 6 inches — a couple inches wider than the bottles.

    • 3

Cut the two side pieces of MDF 10 inches wide and to the required height. The height of the frame should be dividable by 6 inches so each shelf is evenly positioned. Cut a top and a bottom piece each measuring 10 inches by 6 inches.

    • 4

Secure the two side pieces to the top piece using ring shank nails. Turn the three-sided frame the other way up and repeat to secure the bottom piece. The distance between the two side pieces should be 6 inches.

    • 5

Cut the required amount of shelves to fit within the frame. Each cubbyhole should measure 6 inches by 6 inches.

    • 6

Measure 6 inches from the bottom piece of the frame and position the first shelf. Secure with ring shank nails. Measure 6 inches from this shelf and place the next one, repeating until you have all the shelves securely in place.

    • 7

Fill the nail holes with putty. Allow to dry, then paint the wine rack.
