DIY Triangular Cabinet

Although creating a triangular cabinet is a challenging do-it-yourself project, it's well worth the trouble if you're low on storage space. Corner cabinets work well in any room, but they're especially useful in living rooms and offices where you may need to store a milieu of small items. Before you begin, clear the corner for your cabinet and a large workspace.

Instructions

  1. Build the Cabinet

    • 1

Determine the dimensions of your cabinet. To help you visualize the correct size for your cabinet walls, cut out identical pieces of butcher paper and tape them to the corner walls where your cabinet will go. Write down the measurements of the paper for the sides of your cabinet.

    • 2

Cut two identical cabinet sides from ¾-inch lumber, using the circular saw.

    • 3

Use the height measurements of the sides to create a narrow back piece 2 inches wide. Cut the back piece from 3/4-inch lumber, using the saw. The sides will attach to the narrow back piece, which provides a space for cords or wires that may need to run behind the cabinet.

    • 4

Apply wood glue to the edges of the narrow back piece. Press the cabinet sides into the back section and allow it to dry completely.

    • 5

Reinforce the structure with a brad nailer and 1-inch brads, placing the nails about 1 inch apart.

    • 6

Measure the size of your cabinet's triangular bottom as well as the distance across the cabinet walls for the base of the triangle. Use the outside width of your cabinet sides for the bottom's equal triangular sides.

    • 7

Cut your cabinet bottom from ¾-inch plywood, using the saw.

    • 8

Spread glue on the bottom edges of your cabinet sides. Carefully place the sides on top of the bottom section. Allow the glue to dry.

    • 9

Turn the cabinet over and reinforce the bottom with 1-inch brads. Drill 1 1/2-inch screws into the bottom at the cabinet's joints. Flip over the cabinet.

    • 10

Add 2 inches to the side and base measurements of your bottom triangle to create the dimensions for the top of the cabinet. The extra 2 inches is decorative and adds surface area to the top of the cabinet. Cut the top from 1-inch-thick lumber.

    • 11

Apply wood glue to the top edges of your cabinet sides and place the top triangle on top of the cabinet. Line up the top corners of the triangle to form a decorative overhang along the hypotenuse of the triangle.

    • 12

Reinforce the top of your cabinet from the inside, using a 90-degree drill head attachment on your electric drill. Drill 1 1/2-inch screws along the joints between the cabinet sides and cabinet.

    Attach a Door

    • 13

Determine the height and width measurements for the door by measuring the opening of the cabinet. Your door will rest outside the sides of the cabinet.

    • 14

Cut the door from 1-inch lumber, using the saw.

    • 15

Decide on which side the door hinges will hang. Measure and mark the wrong side of your door to attach two door hinges 2 inches from the top and bottom of the door.

    • 16

Hold the door up to the cabinet opening and mark the desired location with masking tape or a pencil. Use a laser beam lever to help make your reference points straight across the cabinet.

    • 17

Read and follow the manufacturer's instructions for drilling the hinges to the door of the cabinet. Attach the door hinges to the inside of the cabinet. Use your marked reference points to help position the door.

    • 18

Practice opening and closing the door to ensure it moves properly.

    • 19

Install a door handle according the manufacturer’s instructions.

    • 20

Place your triangular cabinet in the corner.
