How to Adjust the Chimes of a Seth Thomas Grandfather Clock

Seth Thomas stopped making grandfather clocks in the early 1990s and went out of business during the mid 2000s. Fortunately, all grandfather clocks work the same way. The pendulum and weights operate the clock movement. The pendulum keeps the time while the weights operate the chimes. The chimes of the clock can get out of sync with the time on the face. Some minor adjustments should make the clock chime properly again.

Instructions

  1. Chiming Early or Late

    • 1

Stop the pendulum and note the time the chime began. For example, if the clock should chime at 2:30, but chimes at 2:25, stop the pendulum and write down 2:25.

    • 2

Turn the nut holding the clock hands onto the face of the grandfather clock counterclockwise with pliers. Hold the clock hands near the center of the clock face and remove the small nut.

    • 3

Pull the minute hand with your fingers and gently pull it from the clock face. Do not remove the hour hand.

    • 4

Turn the minute hand over to expose the small collar around the shaft hole. Grab the collar with the pliers and hold it securely as you turn the minute hand counterclockwise slightly. If the chime started 5 minutes after the hour, hold the collar and turn the minute hand clockwise.

    • 5

Put the minute hand back onto the clock face in the same time it was on when the pendulum stopped. Replace the nut to secure the minute hand on the clock.

    • 6

Start the pendulum and set the clock to the correct time. Monitor the clock until it chimes once again. If the chime still starts before or after the hour, quarter-hour or half-hour, repeat the steps to adjust the collar on the minute hand until the clock chimes correctly.

    Incorrect Hour Chime

    • 7

Move the hour hand to line up with the correct hour. For example, if the grandfather clock chimes four times when the hour hand is over the 2, move the hour hand so it is over the 4.

    • 8

Rotate the minute hand clockwise until the clock returns to the correct time. For example, each 360-degree rotation of the minute hand moves the hour hand forward to the next hour.

    • 9

Allow the grandfather clock to run for two hours. The clock will adjust itself to the proper time and chime sequence.
