How to Convert a Dry Sink to a Vanity

Vintage sinks and vanities are all the rage in bathroom remodels. Fortunately, there’s no need to break the bank purchasing a brand new antique wannabe just to give your bathroom a new look. Instead, shop around at local thrift stores and garage sales for your own unique furniture piece. In a few simple steps you’ll be well on your way to a totally unique bathroom vanity.

Measuring tape
Marker
Jigsaw or equivalent
Hammer and nails or drill and screws
Tip-out drawer converter kit

  Measure the vanity area in your bathroom before you purchase the dry sink you wish to convert. In a small space like a bathroom, just an inch or two can mean the difference between a piece that fits and one that doesn’t.

  Shop for sinks after you’ve decided on a furniture piece. Purchase one that will fit will within the measurements of your dry sink.

  Trace the sink template with a marker onto the top surface of the dry sink. Mark the back of the dry sink for plumbing holes.

  Examine the inside of the dry sink to make sure there’s room for the sink bowl and the pipes under the sink. If your dry sink has drawers, you may need to convert the top drawer to a tip-out drawer to make additional space for the sink.

  Use a jigsaw to cut out the sink hole and plumbing holes. Test the sink to make sure it fits into the hole in the top. If you plan to sand, paint or refinish your furniture piece, do it after you cut these holes.

  Caulk the edge of the sink hole and set the sink bowl inside. Press lightly and allow several hours for the caulk to set.

  Attach the faucet and other hardware to the sink. Position the converted dry sink in the bathroom and hook up plumbing.

  Secure your new vanity to the wall with nails or screws, if needed.
