DIY Mid-Century Sideboard

Around the middle of the 20th century, households used sideboards for storage in the kitchen to save space. A sideboard can serve other purposes as well, such as in the living room or your bedroom. Anywhere you can use some extra storage or need a decorative piece of furniture to dress up the room is a good place for a mid-century sideboard. However, a real sideboard can be expensive. Instead, you can make your own from cabinets bought at a home improvement store.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the kickboards from the bottom of the cabinet with a saw. The furniture feet will hold up the cabinets instead.

    • 2

Place the cabinets directly up against each other. Insert two 1-by-3-inch furring strips in between each pair of cabinets -- one at the front and one at the back. Drill pilot holes through the one cabinet, the furring strips and into the other cabinet. Insert wood screws to hold the cabinets together.

    • 3

Cut two 1-by-3-inch furring strips to fit along the front outside edges of the outer cabinets. Nail them in place.

    • 4

Cut pieces of plywood to fit over the outsides of the end cabinets. Nail the plywood in place to create a finished side to the cabinet.

    • 5

Cut a 1/2-by-1-inch lattice to fit across the entire front of the three cabinets plus 1 inch. Nail this strip in place just beneath the drawers on the cabinets.

    • 6

Cut 1/2-by-2-inch lattice strips to fit over the spacers between the cabinets. You need two longer ones to fit from the horizontal lattice strip to the bottom of the cabinets and two shorter ones for the top section.

    • 7

Install metal foot plates onto the outer corners on the bottom of the cabinets. Insert the five screws into each foot plate along the bottom edge of the cabinet.

    • 8

Twist the feet into place on the foot plates to give the sideboard legs.

    • 9

Flip the sideboard upright so it stands on its legs.

    • 10

Measure the height of the drawers and divide in half to determine where to place the drawer knobs vertically on the drawer. Measure 4 inches in from the outer edges and mark the spot with a pencil.

    • 11

Drill holes into the drawers where you placed the pencil marks. Screw the drawer knobs in place.

    • 12

Nail a small block of wood into each cabinet behind the doors in the spot where you want to install the push latch. This should be near the top, bottom or middle of the door depending on your preferences.

    • 13

Install the push latch with screws. Make sure the push latch is even with the front of the cabinet.

    • 14

Attach the metal plate to the end of the push latch. Cover the back of the metal plate with chalk and close the door. The chalk will leave a mark on the door, helping you position the metal plate.

    • 15

Screw the metal plate in place on the back of the door.

    • 16

Cut a piece of plywood to fit over the top of the cabinets. The piece should be large enough to cover the additional side pieces you added, as well as the front lattice pieces. Nail the plywood top onto the cabinets.

    • 17

Cut pieces of 3/4-inch bed molding to fit underneath the plywood top. Miter the edges at a 45-degree angle so they fit together neatly. Nail the molding pieces in place under the edge of the plywood on the front and two sides.

    • 18

Sand the entire sideboard with medium-grit sandpaper to help the paint stick well.

    • 19

Paint the sideboard with paint to match the room or a wood stain that goes well with your other furniture.
