How to Fix Peeling on Jaymar Leather Furniture

Jaymar has been creating high quality, upholstered furniture from the world's finest leathers since 1956. Furniture of such high quality can be expensive and you will want to do everything you can to make it last as long as possible. Unfortunately, like all other leather furniture, Jaymar leather can become damaged and peel over time. Even if you do not want to spend money having your leather furniture repaired by a professional, you can prolong its lifetime. All you need are a few common household items and a leather repair kit.

Instructions

    • 1

Combine one part liquid dish detergent and three parts water in a small bowl. Agitate the water to create lots of suds. You will be using these suds to cleanse the leather.

    • 2

Dip a scrubber-sponge in the suds created by the cleaning solution. Scrub the peeling leather gently with the abrasive side of the sponge. Work in small circular motions to cleanse and remove as much of the damaged leather as possible. Rinse with water and wipe the area dry with a towel.

    • 3

Apply denatured alcohol to the peeling area of the leather with a paper towel and allow to sit for five to 10 minutes. Wipe dry with a towel. The alcohol may cause a slight discoloration of the leather. This is normal and will be corrected with leather dye.

    • 4

Smooth the peeling leather with a fine-grit sandpaper. Use the sandpaper to remove the remainder of the damaged leather. Wipe any dust away from the area with a towel and spray the area with a leather prep solution. Wipe dry with a towel.

    • 5

Apply leather glue to the rough edges of the peeling leather. The glue will help to prevent future damage and peeling. Allow the glue to dry for the amount of time specified on the bottle, usually an hour or two. Smooth the glue with fine-grit sandpaper.

    • 6

Apply leather filler to any cracks left by the peeling leather. Start by applying one thin coat then smoothing and removing excess filler with a clean cloth. Continue applying thin coats of leather filler and smoothing until the damage is no longer visible.

    • 7

Spray leather dye on the repaired area to match the color of the rest of the leather. Allow the dye to dry for at least one hour and apply another coat. Repeat until you have sprayed on three coats of dye. Allow the dye to dry fully before moving on. This can take up to 10 hours.

Rub the entire piece of leather furniture with a leather conditioner. The conditioner not only will restore beauty to your Jaymar leather, but also will protect it from future wear and tear.
