Releasing the Pulleys on a Howard Miller Grandfather Clock

When you receive your first Howard Miller grandfather clock, you will notice the different areas of the clock that have been carefully packed for shipping. Howard Miller ships its clocks filled with pieces of cardboard to protect the chime bars, plastic to protect the chain, sponge foam to protect the strike hammers and foam blocks to protect the pulleys. When setting up your clock for the first time, you have to remove all the packing materials to release the working mechanism of the clock with the exception of the pulleys. Releasing the pulleys occurs after you start your grandfather clock.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the front door on your Howard Miller grandfather clock. Look inside the clock and find the three pulleys just beneath the face of the clock. Each pulley has a foam block that holds it snug to the top of the clock.

    • 2

Hang the pendulum from the pendulum guide inside the clock. Hang the three weights on the pulleys. Each weight is marked with its pulley location of left, middle and right.

    • 3

Set the time on your clock and push the pendulum to start your Howard Miller grandfather clock movement. Allow the clock to run for about 24 hours.

    • 4

Reach inside the clock to remove the foam blocks from above each pulley to release them. The 24-hour time period allows the cables to loosen their grip on the foam that held the pulleys in place, according to the manufacturer.
