How to Build Entryway Furniture

Entryway furniture holds an important position in a home, as it is often the first portion of the home to be seen by guests. This gives it the prominent role of setting the tone for the home. As such, the furniture in the entryway should present an attractive scene that is well-organized. Coat racks and shoe benches are the two standard pieces of entryway furniture that can help keep the space clutter-free.

Instructions

  1. Building a Coat Rack

    • 1

Mark the locations of the studs in the wall, using a stud finder. Mark each side of the stud to show the entire available installation area.

    • 2

Sand a 1-by-3-by-24-inch board with medium-grit sandpaper. Sand until the edges and corners are smoothed over and curved. Mark five evenly spaced spots across the front of the board.

    • 3

Drill a hole through each marked spot. Set a hook over each hole and pass the included attachment bolt or screw through the hole and into the hook. Tighten the hooks firmly in place.

    • 4

Hold the rack over the marked wall and drill through the rack into each stud. Attach the rack to the wall with 4-inch screws passed through washers.

    Building a Shoe Bench

    • 5

Set two 3/4-by-18-by-36-inch plywood boards on the ground, parallel to each other on their long, thin sides. Hold them upright with the help of an assistant. Consider these boards the top and bottom boards.

    • 6

Put two 3/4-by-18-by-18-inch plywood boards between the top and bottom boards, along the ends so that the four boards form a 19 1/2-by-36-inch rectangular frame.

    • 7

Set 2-inch metal L-brackets on the inside of the frame, spanning each connection between two boards with three brackets. Drill out the bracket holes and attach the brackets in place with 3/4-inch wood screws.

    • 8

Set two more 3/4-by-18-by-18-inch plywood boards evenly spaced within the frame, segmenting the frame into three equally-sized square openings. Position three brackets on each side of these boards, where they meet the top and bottom boards. Attach the brackets in the same manner as before.

    • 9

Lower a 3/4-by-19 1/2-by-36-inch plywood board onto the ground. Set the frame on top of the board, which is the rear board, and secure the frame to the rear board with 2-inch metal L-brackets, spaced every 6 inches around the frame.
