How to Make a TV Hutch

Having a place to set your television that also keeps frequently used movie and game systems nearby can maximize storage space in your home. While large entertainment armoires are available as most furniture stores, you can make a TV hutch for much less on your own. Even a basic hutch can accommodate a television that measures up to 34 inches wide and 30 inches tall. Once your hutch is constructed, plan to stain or paint it to match other furniture items in your home.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the two 20-by-60-inch pieces of plywood side by side on a flat surface. Measure and mark horizontal lines across the width of the boards at 3 inches up from the bottom and 29 inches up from the bottom.

    • 2

Stand the two boards 34 inches apart with the marked lines facing in. Align one of the 20-by-34-inch shelf boards between the long side boards so it rests on the 3-inch height line to make the bottom shelf. Secure the board with four evenly spaced screws on each end, driving the screws through the long side boards and into the ends of the shelf.

    • 3

Position and secure a second 20-by-34-inch board at the 29-inch line on the side boards. Place a third shelf board between the side boards at the very top and secure with screws. Position the last remaining shelf as desired between the bottom shelf and the center shelf at 29 inches high. Secure this shelf with screws.

    • 4

Lay the unit on the ground with an open face of shelving facing up. Place the 36-by-60-inch sheet of plywood over the opening to make a back panel and align it on all four sides to cover the entire surface of the hutch. Secure with screws every 8 inches along the edges.

    • 5

Flip the unit over so it rests on the back panel. Lay the 1-by-4-inch board over the front of the hutch to cover the 3-inch gap along the bottom. Secure the board to the side boards and edge of the bottom shelf with four, evenly spaced screws.

    • 6

Set a 1-by-2-inch board over the face edge of the top most board and the shelf that runs 29 inches up from the bottom. Allow the 2-inch width of these boards to overhang the shelf edge by 1 inch in front of the underside of the shelves. Secure with four evenly spaced screws.

    • 7

Lay the two 13-by-24-inch boards side by side over the shelf space to act as doors, leaving the top 30 inches of space open. Secure the edge of the doors to the side boards of the hutch with two evenly spaced hinges on either side using the 1-inch screws that come with the hinges. Stand the unit upright to complete.
