Place all of your pine and wood boards down and sand the tops, sides and bottoms with fine-grit sandpaper. You want to carefully sand each part of the board, removing any splinters or blemishes that you see on the wood. The wood should feel smooth when you run your hand across it.
Lay all of the wood boards on a plastic tarp. Dip a paintbrush into a can of paint and wipe the excess paint off on the lip of the can. Apply a thin coat of paint to each wood board. After the paint dries, turn the boards over and apply paint to the backside.
Set the two pine boards approximately 35 inches away from each other. The two boards serve as the sides of your futon frame. Each board should sit level and be an equal distance apart. The boards are 75 inches long, 6 inches wide and 2 inches thick.
Arrange one of the smaller 1-inch-thick boards on top of the longer side boards. Place the board on top of the side boards so that 2 inches of each board overhang the edges of each side board. Place a second thin board at the top of the two side boards with the edges overhanging the sides.
Hold one 2-inch wood screw on the top of one of the shorter boards. Tighten the screw with an electric screwdriver until the screw goes through both boards and sits flush with the wood. Repeat this step on the opposite end of this shorter board and then again with the top board.
Space the remaining thin boards across the top of the side boards. Sink a 2-inch wood screw through each end of the board, where the board meets the side board. Attach each board to the side board with the edges overhanging slightly. This creates a basic futon frame.
