DIY Tiki Shelf

Tiki-inspired spaces allow homeowners to create an island feel, no matter how far from the tropical weather they reside. Tiki shelving fits in perfectly with the tropical theme, while providing you with a utilitarian decoration to store your coconuts or monkey statues. Instead of building a complex wooden shelf from scratch, use or purchase a metal shelf kit and decorate it with tiki-inspired pieces, including bamboo and thatching.

Instructions

    • 1

Construct the metal shelving unit according to the manufacturer’s directions. If you already have a metal shelving unit available, wipe it down with a damp cloth to remove any dust, debris or dirt.

    • 2

Coat the shelving with a layer of brown metal spray paint. Shake the can of spray paint for at least 30 seconds, then hold it 10 to 12 inches from the shelving and applying the product in even, back and forth strokes. Allow the first layer of paint to dry according to the package directions, or at least four hours, then apply another light coat. The brown provides a more natural appearance to the shelving.

    • 3

Cut pieces of bamboo matting to fit the tops of each shelf with a utility knife. Wear work gloves while cutting the mats to prevent injury.

    • 4

Attach the bamboo matting to the top of each shelf with contact cement. Spread a thin layer of contact cement on the metal shelf. Lay the bamboo matting over the shelf and place weighted objects, such as a heavy book stack or brick, on the bamboo to ensure it adheres. Allow the glue to set for at least 12 hours before continuing.

    • 5

Remove the weighted objects and attach thatching to the front of the shelving. Unroll the thatching, which is available at party supply stores, and cut it to fit the shelving’s length. Apply a thin layer of the contact cement to the first shelf’s front and attach the thatching. Continue this process until the front of each shelf is covered with the thatch. If the thatch is too long, cut it to a length of around 2 to 3 inches with a utility knife before attaching it to the shelf.

    • 6

Wrap clear Christmas lights around the shelving’s four posts. The lights draw attention away from the brown shelving posts while illuminating your unit.

    • 7

Display tiki-inspired pieces, such as a small anchor, bikini, pineapples or a small fish tank on the shelves to complete the look.
