How to Build Cabinet Sliding Doors Using Ball Bearings

Sliding doors make opening cabinets in tight spaces possible. Ball-bearing tracks reduce the friction. The double tracks for the doors are installed at the top and bottom of the cabinet. The bottom set has the ball bearings. When you're installing sliding doors on cabinets, you need enough width to allow two doors to slide past each other.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Wooden cabinet doors
  • Handsaw or power saw
  • 1 set of ball-bearing cabinet-door slide tracks
  • Vix bits
  • Phillip's screwdriver
  • Wood screws

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and cut two wooden cabinet doors to fit inside the cabinet opening, using a handsaw or power saw. You should have enough space on the top and the bottom to allow for the tracks. Each cabinet door should be half the width of the cabinet opening so that the two doors closed side-by-side will completely cover the cabinet opening.

    • 2

Place the top double track on the upper inside edge of the cabinet, close to the opening.

    • 3

Drill holes for wood screws through the holes in the track, using a Vix bit.

    • 4

Screw the wood screws into the holes that you've made to attach the top track.

    • 5

Place the bottom double track along the lower inside edge of the cabinet, close to the opening.

    • 6

Drill holes for the screws that will go into the bottom double track, using your Vix bit. Move the bearings in the track as needed to access the screw holes. The bottom track should be directly beneath the top track to ensure that the cabinet doors are straight up and down.

    • 7

Tilt one of the two cabinet doors into the rear runner of the top track, and position the bottom of the door in the rear runner of the lower track. Tilt the second door into the front runner of the top track, and position the lower part of the door into the bottom front runner of double track.

    • 8

Close the doors so that one cabinet door is on the left and the other cabinet door is on the right.
