How to Build CD DVD Storage

If you collect CDs or DVDs, you might want to save money by building your own CD and DVD storage unit. This pattern can easily be adapted to either CD or DVD storage by changing the space between the shelves. If you're not sure whether you will be storing CDs or DVDs or both, size the shelves for DVDs. This way you have the option of storing either. Once you've built the storage unit, you can either leave it unfinished or apply paint, then a clear sealer, to the surface to enhance its look.

Instructions

    • 1

Nail one 6-by-48 inch piece of plywood perpendicular to each long edge of the 8-by-48 inch piece of plywood, making three sides of a long box.

    • 2

Use your hammer and nails to affix one 7-by-9 inch piece of plywood to either end of this box, creating a long open rectangular box. Sink the nails through the 7-by-9 inch pieces into the edges of the longer plywood pieces.

    • 3

Apply a continuous line of wood glue all around the outside edge of the 7-by-9 inch plywood piece you want to serve as the bottom of your box. Center the 8-by-10 inch piece of plywood so that it overlaps an equal amount on every side, then press it firmly onto the smaller piece, and clamp it in place. It will need to dry overnight before you remove the clamp, but you can continue working on the rest of your CD and DVD storage unit in the meantime.

    • 4

Draw four parallel straight lines up and down the inside of the open box you made, running from top to bottom along the sides of the box. One set of lines should be 2 inches back from the open side of the box. The other should by 4 inches back from the open lip of the box.

    • 5

Mark dots on each line, making them 8 inches apart if you want to store DVDs and 5 inches apart if you want to store CDs.

    • 6

Drill through the holes you marked, using a drill bit that is the same width as the posts on your shelf holders. If you don't have any shelf holders, you can pound small nails in through the marks you made instead. Leave enough of the nail sticking out from the wood to hold the shelves up, and take care to make sure you don't pound the nails in so far that they protrude from the sides of your storage unit.

    • 7

Remove the clamp from the bottom of the storage unit once the wood glue is dry--usually between 12 and 24 hours--and set it upright.

    • 8

Insert shelf holders in the holes you made, then place the 7 1/2-by-6 inch pieces of plywood on top of the shelf holders (or nails) as shelves. You're now ready to stack your CDs or DVDs in the storage unit.
