How to Build a Wall Mounted Magazine Rack

Magazines are great to look at for the articles, but when they are strewn across the top of a table, they can be clutter. A good way to display your favorite magazines and keep them available for easy access is to use a magazine rack mounted to a wall. When you design and build your own magazine rack, you can create one that matches your decor and looks attractive on the wall.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw the pattern for all of the pieces on the plywood. The back will be a rectangle 14 inches wide and 16 inches high. The front will be 14 inches wide and 8 inches high. The bottom will be a rectangle 14 inches long and 4 1/2 inches wide. The sides are a little more complex. The edge of the side pieces that attach to the back will be 16 inches long. The top half should be 1 inch wide and 8 inches long. From the end of this top half, go out 3 more inches, and then taper down to the bottom edge of the side piece, which should be 2 inches wide.

    • 2

Cut the front, back and bottom pieces.

    • 3

Use finishing nails to attach the 16-inch edge of the back piece to the 16-inch edge of the side pieces.

    • 4

Use finishing nails to attach the 8-inch edge of the front piece to the slanted edge of the side pieces. There will be a small gap at the bottom. This is fine.

    • 5

Use finishing nails to attach the bottom piece to the bottom edges of the side and back pieces.

    • 6

Sand all of the rough edges until smooth.

    • 7

Paint or stain the magazine rack and allow to dry.

    • 8

Locate the wall studs on the area of the wall where you want to mount the magazine rack. Drill holes in the magazine rack so they will line up with the stud. You may want to drill a hole near the top and near the bottom of the back. The small gap at the front of the magazine rack should allow you to operate a drill through it.

Insert the screws through the holes in the magazine rack and into the wall stud.
