How to Create Your Own DVD Storage Unit

  Cut wood to size with a circular saw and identify each piece by using a pencil to write its number on the wood. For example, B-1, B-2 for the two main side pieces.

  Softwood
  A. 1/4-inch by 5-3/4-inch by 73-1/2-inch (cut one)

  Hardwood
  B. 3/4-inch by 5-1/4-inch by 73-1/2-inch (cut two)
  C. 3/4-inch by 5-inch by 5-inch (cut two)
  D. 3/4-inch by 8-inch by 8-inch (cut two)
  E. 3/4-inch by 11-inch by 11-inch (cut one)

  Rabbets
  Cut 3/8-inch wide by 1/4-inch deep rabbet joints along both side of piece B-1 and B-2. Rabbet joints will allow the softwood backing of the tower to sit flush with the sides.

  Router Edges (optional)
  To add a decorative edge to the bottom pieces of your storage unit, router pieces D and E in whatever pattern you desire.

  Construct the main box unit using pieces A, B, and C. Lay piece A (softwood backing) right-side up on the floor. Run a bead of wood glue along the rabbet joints of both B pieces (sides) and attach to piece A, apply pressure to help the glue take hold and let dry.

  Run a bead of wood glue along three sides of piece C (top and bottom of main box unit) and set in place. Apply pressure to help the glue take hold and let dry.

  When the glue is dry, secure seams with finishing nails spaced 2 to 3 inches apart.

  Add bottom using pieces D and E. Place piece E on the floor, run a bead of wood glue along the edges of piece D and center on the top of piece E and let dry. (Make sure to align pieces correctly if you added a decorative edge).

  Run two beads of wood glue along the bottom of the main box unit and set on top of piece D. Press down gently to help the glue take hold and let dry. When the glue is dry, secure the seam by adding four finishing nails, one in each corner.

  Sand the DVD storage unit, paint or stain and varnish. Get creative in decorating your new DVD storage unit. Paint it, stain it, use decals and make it look original.

  Add DVD holder strips. For a more professional look, purchase plastic DVD holder strips. Peel off the adhesive backing and attach inside on each side of the DVD storage unit.
