Homemade DVD Storage

While DVD movies are certainly smaller and easier to store than their predecessors--the VHS tape--they can still take up a lot of space. Creative storage solutions are available for purchase in almost any retail department store or electronics store. However, these can often be expensive or simply don't fit in with your home's decor. If this is the case, creating a storage place for your DVDs at home is a great project.
  1. Storage With Cases

    • There are several options for storing DVDs if you choose to store them in their plastic cases. Building your own basic shelf is fairly easy and can be a great way to build exactly the amount of storage you need. A simple plank of wood attached to a wall with brackets will hold any number of DVDs you need. Just remember to leave room for book ends. Make sure that the shelf is deep enough that the cases don't spill off the edge. This approach also allows to you full freedom in painting or staining the shelf to match your decor as well as buying any range of shelf braces, from simple "L" brackets to more elaborate shelf holders.

For the more industrious builder, a full DVD storage case, much like a book case, can be built to fit any space. Use a thin piece of plywood for the back of the case to provide extra support and create a series of shelves just like a book case. With enough support, these can be hung from walls because DVDs are fairly light.

    Storing DVDs Without Cases

    • Storing DVDs without their cases can be a bit trickier. DVD cases serve to protect the disc from scratches and keep box sets together. However, the bulk of space a DVD takes up is the case, and you can store significantly more DVDs in a smaller space if you choose not to utilize the cases.

One creative way to store DVDs out of the case is to use tacks to hold them onto a cork board. The soft cork won't damage the surface of the DVD and it provides an interesting and unique decoration to your wall as well.

You can also get a large sheet of soft, heavy fabric, such as felt or velvet, and sew it to a sheet of clear, flexible plastic. Sew around the whole sheet. Then sew a series of squares big enough to hold a DVD, leaving the top open. The soft material will protect the DVD surface, while the plastic will allow you to see which DVD is in the slot. You can then hang this from any wall as decoration, or you could hang it out of the way on the back of a closet door or somewhere similar.
