Place the two pieces of 1-by-8-by-59 1/4-inch lumber on a worktable. Mark at 3/4, 9 3/4, 10 1/2, 19 1/2, 20 1/4, 29 1/4, 30, 39, 39 3/4, 48 3/4, 49 1/2 and 58 1/2 inches. Put the framing square on the marks and draw lines across the width of the lumber. These are the ends of the DVD storage case.
Drill two pilot holes between the lines and between the lines and the ends of the lumber. Keep them at least 1-inch away from the edges. Drill countersink holes in the same place as the pilot holes, but do not make them deeper than 3/8-inch.
Apply glue to the ends on the pieces of 1-by-8-by-9-inch lumber. Secure them to the ends with 1 1/4-inch drywall screws. Clean up excess glue with a damp cloth.
Run a bead of glue in the center of the edges of the DVD storage case. Set the 59 1/4-by-10 1/2-by-1/4-inch plywood on the DVD storage case and secure it with the 4-penny box nails. Turn the storage case over and clean up excess glue with a damp cloth.
Sand the entire DVD storage case with 100-grit sandpaper. Apply paint or stain as desired.
