Instructions

    • 1

Design your shelf. Take into account the amount of space you have to work with in your living room, the amount of DVDs you will need to store and any personal artistic flourish you would like to add to your shelf. Use a ruler to determine how wide your shelf should be.

    • 2

Cut pieces of 1/4-inch-thick wood with a saw. The length of the wood will be determined by the length of the shelf you are building. For instance, if you want a case with a width of 2 feet, cut a piece of 1/4-inch thick wood that is 2 feet long. The amount of shelves that you cut will depend entirely on how many DVDs you have to store, or how high you want the case.

    • 3

Cut two pieces of 1/4-inch-thick wood that will act as the the ends of the case. The length of the two pieces will be determined by how high you want the case to be.

    • 4

Lay down the base of the shelf with one of the pieces from Step 2. Use a hammer and nails (or glue, if you prefer to use that instead) to attach the base to the two ends of the case. After the pieces are attached, take a ruler and make marks every 8 1/2 inches. This is a standard measurement between shelves so that DVDs can easily fit.

Align the shelves with the marks made in Step 3 and attach them with a hammer and nails (or glue). If possible, have someone help by holding the shelf steady while you attach it to the side of the case. If you want, add a top to the case by attaching another board from Step 2.
