Place four pieces of 7 1/2-by-21-inch plywood (sides) on a worktable. Measure from one 7 1/2-inch end and make marks at 10 3/4 and 11 3/4 inches. Put the framing square on the marks and draw lines across the width of the plywood. Repeat this step using plywood pieces measuring 15-by-21 inches (fronts, measure from the 15-inch edge).
Apply a bead of glue on the 21-inch edges of the fronts. Secure the sides to these two pieces with the finish nails. They will only be even on one end.
Put some glue on the top edge of the front and on the ends of the 7 1/2-inch pieces (tops). Secure the pieces at the top between the sides with the finish nails. Clean up the excess glue immediately with a damp cloth.
Secure the four pieces of 2-inch pieces to one edge of the four pieces of 7-inch pieces with 1-inch brads. This is the front of the shelves.
Run a bead of glue on the ends and back edges of the shelves. Secure them between the sides at the bottom and between the lines with the finish nails. Clean up the glue when you're done with a damp cloth.
Add glue to one long edge of the 6 3/4-inch pieces and secure the 5 1/2-inch pieces to them with the finish nails (troughs). Clean up the glue with a damp cloth when you're done.
Drill a 3/16-inch countersink hole 1/4-inch deep in the middle of the 6 3/4-inch pieces. Place the troughs on the shelves letting the front of the 5 1/2-inch pieces rest on the 2-inch strips. Drive a 1-inch wood screw through the plywood at the countersink hole to secure the trough to the DVD case with a screwdriver.
Install the piano hinge to both parts of the DVD case according to the manufacturer's instructions. Repeat this for the decorative latch.
