How to Build a Cabinet Around an LCD TV

LCD televisions launched a new era in TV cabinets. With the thinner profile of the television, the cabinets to house them have also adopted a thinner profile. Depending on the size of the set and whether it is wall-mounted or sits on a stand, building a cabinet around an LCD TV is a project that do-it-yourself consumers can accomplish with confidence. Use solid lumber to give the edges of the shelves a finished look.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut and mark the partitions. Measure the height of the LCD TV and add 4 inches. Cut two pieces from the 1-by-12-inch lumber to this length with the circular saw. Make a mark 1 inch from one long side of the partition. Move the tape 10 inches and make another mark 1-inch from the long side. Repeat this from the opposite long side.

    • 2

Make the sides and the shelves. Add 28 inches to the height of the TV for the sides of the cabinet. Cut two pieces from the 1-by-12-inch lumber with the circular saw. Add 26 1/2 inches to the measurement of the width and cut four pieces from the 1-by-12-inch lumber.

    • 3

Mark the sides for shelves and adjustable shelf tracks. Make marks at 11 1/4 and 12 inches from the ends of the sidepieces for the shelves. Make marks 1 inch from long sides as you did on the partitions.

    • 4

Install the adjustable shelf tracks. Place the adjustable shelf tracks on the 1-inch marks on the sides of the cabinet. Keep them between the marks for the shelves and secure them with the provided tacks. Secure the adjustable shelf tracks on the 1-inch marks on the partitions as well.

    • 5

Draw lines on two shelves for the partitions. Measure from the ends of two of the shelves and make marks at 10 1/2 and 11 1/4 inches. Put the framing square on the marks and draw lines across the lumber.

    • 6

Build the cabinet. Secure the partitions to the shelves marked for them with the finish nails. Be certain the adjustable shelf tracks are facing towards the ends of the shelves. Set the shelves with the partitions between the lines drawn on the sides and the remaining shelves at the top and bottom of the sides. Secure them with the finish nails.

Measure and cut installation strips. Measure the distance between the sides and cut two pieces from the 1-by-2-inch lumber. Secure one between the sides against the bottom side of the top with the finish nails. Repeat this on top of the bottom shelf.
