How to Organize AV Equipment Furniture

Audiovisual (AV) equipment furniture is used to store and organize your home entertainment system. Ideally, the furniture is both functional and attractive. Since most AV furniture can be set up and adjusted in different ways to accommodate your equipment, organizing your gear and media storage helps you get maximum enjoyment from your system with the added convenience of being able to access what you need when you need it. Organization can be a matter of personal preference but there are basic considerations to take into account, such as proper ventilation for amplifiers and receivers.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the TV set around to check the specifications on the back label or review the owner's manual for the weight of the set. AV equipment furniture for holding a TV, whether on a media center or a bracket for wall mounting, is rated to hold a maximum weight. The TV cannot exceed the weight rating for the furniture.

    • 2

Measure the width and height of your AV equipment with a tape measure. This helps you determine how much space is needed in the AV furniture for proper ventilation.

    • 3

Adjust the shelves for AV equipment so that the amplifier or receiver is on the top shelf and has at least one inch of air clearance on all sides. This prevents overheating, which can shorten the life of your equipment.

    • 4

Place electronic components behind protected areas of the AV equipment furniture, such as behind glass or wooden doors that block dust. The doors should open readily to access the equipment and close for a tidy presentation. Stack the components in an order that will be convenient to use. If you need to insert or remove CDs frequently, place the CD player on a shelf at a comfortable height.

    • 5

Store media within arm's reach of the corresponding AV equipment. For example, a storage shelf to the left or right of the CD player would be useful for storing CDs.

    • 6

Organize AV cables through the openings in the back of the AV furniture, where it is easier to see the connection jacks on the equipment. Use a flashlight to view the back panels and labeled jacks on your equipment.
