How to Use an Entertainment Center As Storage

Originally designed to house and store your television and its related components -- the DVD player, game consoles and other entertainment devices -- entertainment centers are becoming more multipurpose, and many people are now buying entertainment centers with more storage in mind. Especially in smaller homes with limited closet space, an entertainment center offers a number of options for storing items out of sight. Even if you don't purchase a traditional entertainment center and instead use an armoire, large coffee table or other storage cabinet to hold your television, you can usually find a way to make your entertainment center do double-duty as storage.

Use the built-in storage in the entertainment center. Many entertainment centers are designed with storage in mind, and come with drawers, cabinets and shelves for storing and displaying movies, games and other items. If you are purchasing a new entertainment center, look for one that includes these features to keep your belongings organized.

Purchase baskets or other storage containers to organize items on the shelves of your entertainment center. Loading your entertainment center shelves with piles of books, games, movies and knickknacks looks cluttered and messy; hide items in fabric-lined baskets or canvas containers that coordinate with your decor. These organizational tools not only keep the entertainment center tidy, but create a cohesive look in the room.

Repurpose an entertainment center that is no longer used to store a television and video equipment. The multiple shelves and cabinets make an entertainment center an ideal addition to a craft or sewing room for storing supplies and tools. Move the entertainment center to a guest room and use it to store extra linens and blankets.

Cover glass doors or other open areas of your entertainment center if you want to use the piece for storage without displaying all your belongings. Attach a piece of fabric that coordinates with your decor to the glass door to hide the contents of the entertainment center.
