How to Build a DVD Case Drawer

A drawer can be a simple storage unit to keep your DVD while they are stored within their cases. This can start out as a single independent compartment, and you can later move on to creating your own cabinet if you have the time and skill. This building method can vary depending on a number of factors, particularly if you are building a drawer meant to go into an existing cabinet (meaning it must fit the cabinet above all else).

Things You'll Need

  • Wood
  • Saw
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Wood glue
  • Nails
  • Hammer
  • Drawer handle
  • Screwdriver/drill
  • Drawer sliding tracks

Instructions

    • 1

Count the number of DVD cases you plan to store in this drawer (the drawer needs to be at least a half inch long for each case), or stack them and measure the stack.

    • 2

Measure and cut a piece of wood to a length equal to your previous measurement and eight inches in width, creating a floor for the drawer that will seat the cases as they lay sideways.

    • 3

Measure and cut two more pieces to make the sides for the drawer, measuring them to the same length as the floor and at least seven inches wide.

    • 4

Fasten the side pieces to the floor with wood glue, standing the side pieces up on their long edges and gluing them to the side edges of the floor. Nail the boards together once the glue sets.

    • 5

Use the partially assembled drawer as a stencil to draw the front and rear pieces and cut them out of the wood. Glue and then nail these pieces to the front and back ends of the drawer.

    • 6

Attach a handle to the end of the drawer that will be the front end using either a screwdriver or drill and the screws that should be included with the handle.

    • 7

Fasten sliding tracks to the drawer using wood glue. These will go on either both sides of the drawer or on the bottom, depending on the type of tracks and your cabinet. Place the track(s) along the middle of the wood piece(s).
