How to: Homemade Bookcase

If you are an avid reader or collector of books, you may need a bookcase for your home. You can easily purchase a prefabricated bookcase at a local supplier, but making one by hand gives you the opportunity to insert a bit of creativity. Since books are heavy, you will need to take caution when designing the case and arranging the books.

Select a material that will be used in creating the frame for the bookcase. While wood is the most common material, you can also use metal, glass and even particle-board material. Consider the appearance of the bookshelf when deciding on a material to use. Also be sure to select sturdy material that can be used to hold all the books required.

Determine the overall design of the shelf. If the unit will be vertical, make sure the height is lower than the ceiling in the room where the case will be located. Also keep in mind the width in choosing a spot for the bookshelf. Carefully measure your outside frame of the case to the desired length. Use a circular saw to cut the pieces of lumber if the construction material is wood or particle board. For other materials, refer to the manufacturer's cutting instructions.

Attach the frame together using nails for wood, glue for glass or by welding if using metal. Measure the inside width of the box and cut the case shelves out as needed. You can have as many shelves as you wish. Be sure to leave adequate room in between each shelf so books will have enough standing room. Glue or pin the shelves into place. Make sure all the connections being made are sturdy so the shelf will be as stable as possible.

Paint the bookcase if desired. Consider a glossy look that accents your room perfectly if using a wood material. Glass will do well with just about any room. Allow the paint to dry overnight. Begin to load books on the bookcase. Place the heaviest books on the bottom so the bookshelf does not become too top heavy. If you see any cracks or splits develop, consider reducing the amount of weight placed on the shelves and seal them with glue.
