How to Build a Padded Storage Bench

A storage bench is a handy piece of furniture. It is a convenient place to hold blankets in a living room or toys in a kid's bedroom. A padded storage bench not only holds items but doubles as a seat or ottoman. Getting two uses out of a piece of furniture is important to save space, especially in small living quarters where extra space is appreciated. Padded storage benches are not difficult to make, and materials are found in hardware stores and craft supply shops.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut one plywood board in half with the saw so that you end up with two, 2-by-2 foot pieces. Cut the board straight or it will not fit correctly in the bench. Then, cut off ¾ inch on two of the 2-by-4 boards.

    • 2

Sand all wood pieces with the 220-grit sandpaper, making sure to sand down all rough edges. This grit is coarse enough to smooth the wood without creating scratches. A smooth surface will create a professional look when the bench is complete.

    • 3

Fit the plywood boards together to form a box. Start by placing one, 2-by-4 board on a flat surface, then add all the sides and top to ensure a good fit. Once you have confirmed that all the boards fit together, mark the areas where you will pre-drill your holes for the screws. Start at the corners and pre-drill the sides and bottom together, 4 inches apart on the sides and 4 inches apart on the front and back. Your end result should be 6 holes on the 2-foot sides and 12 holes on the 4-foot sides. Install the screws to complete the box and use wood glue along the edges to add stability.

    • 4

Install the hinges by attaching the parts to the box and last plywood board to complete the lid. Install one hinge three inches away from the edge of the box. Repeat for the hinge on the opposite side.

    • 5

Paint the box in your chosen style. Use glossy paints for a more durable finish and, if necessary, use primer to as a base. Paint the inside and outside, and wait for it to dry before handling.

    • 6

Cover the body pillow with the pillow case and use a topstitch to close the open end of the case. Fold the edges of the pillowcase on the open end inside by ½ inch, then draw the needle through the cloth, going up and over until it is fully sealed. Glue the pillow to the top of the bench to finish it.

Install caster wheels to the bottom of the box to make moving it easier. Pre-drill the holes to prevent wood splitting and install appropriate sized screws. Purchase a set of wheels with locks so that the box does not move when you sit on it.
