Measure the height, width and depth of your television with a measuring tape before you shop for an armoire. Allow enough extra height if you will be placing your TV on a swivel shelf. Include extra space for DVD players and game consoles. Look for one with a few drawers in the bottom to house the remotes for them.
Choose an armoire with doors that open wide. Doors that only open 90 degrees will block your view if you sit to the sides while watching TV.
Punch out the pre-cut holes in a purchased armoire's back to accept your TV's power cord. Use a keyhole saw to cut holes if your armoire doesn't have them or if you're converting an old one formerly used to store clothing. Remove clothes rods if you're converting an older armoire.
Position the armoire as close to wall outlets as possible. Plugging your TV and electronics directly into a wall outlet is safer than using extension cords. Overloaded cords present a shock and fire hazard. Leave a few inches between the armoire and the wall. You'll need room for the power cords and for vacuuming.
Install the slide-out or swiveling TV shelf according to the manufacturer's instructions if you choose to use one. These accessories move the TV closer to the front of the armoire, making viewing more comfortable from many locations in the room.
Place the TV set part of the way inside its armoire compartment. Feed its cords and cables through the holes in the back. Settle the TV either on a removable shelf you've installed or on the bottom of the main compartment.
Reach behind the armoire and bundle the cords and cables neatly together with a cable tie. This prevents tangling and makes cleaning easier.
