How to Build a Storage Bin With Pressure Treated Wood

Pressure treated wood is a specially preserved wood enhanced with chemicals that extend the life of the wood and create a fire, insect and fungus resistant finish. This wood is especially good to use for outdoor projects as it weathers well. Creating a pressure treated storage bin is a simple project that many people can complete in under an hour.

Instructions

    • 1

Place one 36-inch 2-by-12 inch section of pressure treated wood on a flat surface running horizontally. Apply wood glue along the top surface of both 36-inch edges. Press one 2-by-11-inch section of pressure treated wood along each glued edge. This will create a U-shaped structure.

    • 2

Line three of the 11-inch edges of the 2-by-11-by-11 inch section of pressure treated wood with wood glue. Insert the square into the end of the U-shaped structure.

    • 3

Line three of the remaining 11-inch edges of the 2-by-11-by-11 inch section of pressure treated wood with wood glue. Insert the square into the remaining open end of the U-shaped structure. This will enclose the four sides of the bin. Allow wood glue to dry for 20 minutes before continuing.

    • 4

Drive one 3-inch screw every 6 inches along every glued edge. This will secure the wooden sides to the base of the storage bin. Place open-top bin on a flat surface so the open side is facing upward and the bin is running 36 inches from left to right.

    • 5

Select the 36-inch edge farthest away from you, and measure in 6 inches from each corner along the inner edge. Position one hinge at each 6-inch mark and attach it to the side of the bin with hinge screws.

    • 6

Place remaining 2-by-12-by-36-inch section of pressure treated wood along the top of the 36-inch edge with hinges attached. Drive the screws through the hinge top into the 2-by-12-by-36-inch section of wood.
