DIY Room Divider & Media Center

Room dividers are a great tool in the management of large spaces. Setting up an attractive and functional storage unit and divider will serve both purposes while complementing the overall look of the room. The key to a room-dividing storage unit is keeping the cables out of the way and keeping the rear of the unit attractive. Using fabric to cover the sections of the unit which have cords and unattractive electronic hindquarters will improve the dual view of the room divider.

Instructions

    • 1

Set two 1/2-inch by 18-inch by 72-inch boards on their long, skinny sides with the help of an assistant. Have the assistant hold the boards parallel to each other, about 4 feet apart, to serve as the side boards of the media center. Push a 1/2-inch by 18-inch by 48-inch board up against one end of the boards, perpendicular to them and touching one end of both. Consider this board the top board of the media center.

    • 2

Drill four evenly-spaced holes through the top board and into each of the side boards, for a total hole count of eight holes. Set 1 1/2-inch wood screws into the holes that were just made and tighten them completely and securely with a drill. Repeat this process for another 1/2-inch by 18-inch by 48-inch board on the other ends of the side boards, which will be the bottom board of the media center.

Position two 1/2-inch by 18-inch by 36-inch boards within the media center, perpendicular to the bottom board and parallel to the side boards. Have an assistant hold them evenly spaced with one end pressed against the bottom board. Drill four holes through the bottom board and into each of the middle boards. Attach the middle boards to the bottom board with 1 1/2-inch wood screws.

Set a 1/2-inch by 18-inch by 47-inch board within the media center, parallel to the top board and perpendicular to the side boards. Push it up against the middle boards so it is evenly positioned against them with its ends touching the side boards. Drill four holes through each side board and into the ends of this board. Attach the boards together with 2 1/2-inch wood screws.

Cover any areas of the unit with an unattractive rear appearance. Simply spread fabric over such areas and staple the fabric around the outside. Stretch the fabric tightly and staple it to the frame every 4 inches. Cut off the excess fabric.
