How to Build a Floating Media Cabinet for a Man Cave

Building the Cabinet

  Stand two 1/2-by-18-by-36 inch boards up on their short skinny ends, parallel to one another, to serve as the side boards of the cabinet. Place a 1/2-by-18-by-24 inch board on top of them to serve as the top board of the cabinet. Move the boards so that the outer edges of the side boards line up perfectly with the outer edges of the top board.

  Drill evenly spaced, 1-inch deep holes every 6 inches around the top board and into the side boards. Put 1-inch screws in the holes and fasten the boards together securely. Repeat for the bottom board.

  Set the assembled cabinet face down on the working surface. Align a 1/2-by-24-by-37 inch board on the rear of the cabinet to serve as the rear board so that all the sides of the board are even with the outsides of the other boards. Put holes every 10 inches all around the edge of the rear board and into the other boards using the drill. Attach the rear board to the adjoining boards using 1-inch wood screws.

  Stand the cabinet upright and position another 1/2-by-24-by-37 inch board in front of it to serve as the cabinet door. Open the door as it would after completion of the cabinet, and prop 2 hinges in place between the door and the cabinet. Use a pencil to note the location of the hinge holes and then drill out these holes. Fix the hinge to the door and the cabinet with 1/2-inch wood screws.

  Add shelves to the cabinet by positioning a 1/2-by-18-by-36 inch board in the cabinet in a desired shelf location. Note the position of the shelf on each side board by drawing a line. Drill two holes into each side board using that line as a reference and plug each hole with a peg. Set the shelf in place on top of the pegs and repeat for each additional desired shelf.

  Drill holes for electric cords to pass from shelf to shelf to get access to the main power supply bar.

Hanging the Cabinet

  Locate the studs in the wall by passing the stud finder back and forth over the area of installation. Mark each side of the stud. Measure the distance between the center of one stud to the next.

  Transfer the stud distance to the interior of the cabinet on the rear board by making three evenly spaced rows of markings. Place the cabinet in its desired location and line up the interior markings with the wall stud markings.

  Drill a hole into each marking, ensuring that each hole hits the studs in the wall. Attach the cabinet to the wall using 3-inch wood screws that have been passed through washers.
