How to Build a TV Component Cabinet

An attractive television component cabinet effectively keeps the mess and jumble of the average home's media elements out of sight. The cabinet is infinitely customizable, as the dimensions can be adjusted for various electronic components or the available space of a room. The shelving heights and door arrangements can be changed to best fit the equipment stored within. Using plywood and standard home tools, this project can be completed in an afternoon with only basic carpentry experience.

Instructions

    • 1

Arrange four 1/2-by-24-by-36-inch boards on the working surface on their long, thin sides so they form the shape of a square. Set each board with one end against another board so that the square frame formed is 36 1/2-inches by 36 1/2-inches.

    • 2

Drill three holes through each board in the square frame and into the end of the board which adjoins it, for a total of 12 holes. Set 2-inch wood screws in the holes and tighten them completely to make the frame secure.

    • 3

Position a 1/2-by-36 1/2-by-36 1/2-inch board on top of the square frame and adjust it so all the edges are even with the frame. Drill holes every 6 inches down through this board, which is the rear board, and into the boards of the square frame. Set 2-inch screws in each hole and tighten the screws to completely fasten the boards.

    • 4

Flip the frame upside down and set a 1/2-by-32-by-36 1/2-inch board on top of the frame, so that it covers the frame but leaves a 4-inch opening on one end, which will be the bottom end of the cabinet. Set two side-mount cabinet hinges in between the new board, which is the door, and one of the side boards next to the bottom board.

    • 5

Mark the location of the hinge holes, lifting the door if necessary to mark the markings. Drill holes into each marking. Set 1/2-inch wood screws in each hole and attach the hinges to the door and side board.

    • 6

Lift the cabinet upright so it is resting on its bottom board. Slide a 1/2-by-24-by-35 1/2-inch board, which is a shelf board into the cabinet, with a 3 1/2-inch space between the shelf and the bottom board. Drill two holes through the side boards and into the shelf board. Set 2-inch screws in each hole and tighten them to attach the shelf. Repeat as needed for additional shelves.
