How to Convert a File Cabinet Into Storage Organizer

File cabinets are designed primarily to hold 8 1/2-by-11 inch paper in folder and files. If you have a big, four-drawer file cabinet, but only enough files and papers to fill a drawer, convert the rest of it into a useful storage unit for all those other things that are floating around the office. Make best use of your file cabinet while simultaneously getting rid of all the clutter that's slowing down your office productivity.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the depth (front to back), width and height of one of the file drawers.

    • 2

Cut two pieces of cardboard to sizes that correspond to the depth and height of the drawer. Cut four pieces that correspond to the width and height of the drawer.

    • 3

Divide the length of the first two pieces of cardboard into five even lengths. If the pieces are 20 inches long, divide the 20 inches into five lengths of four inches each. Draw vertical lines across the cardboard at each point you measured. Cut a notch halfway up these lines.

    • 4

Divide the length of the four pieces of cardboard into three equal lengths, and cut a notch halfway up the cardboard at the two point you marked.

    • 5

Assemble the six pieces of cardboard into a grid by placing the longer pieces in the drawer facing front to back with the notches pointing up. Place one of the shorter pieces of cardboard with its notches facing down over the other pieces and perpendicular to those. Press the piece of cardboard down so the three pieces of cardboard slide together through the notches you made. Do the same with the last three pieces of cardboard. The finished effect should look like the dividers in a whiskey box. You now have a segmented drawer in which you can neatly store Post-It notes, glue sticks and other office supplies.
