DIY AV Cabinet

A basic AV cabinet for audio visual devices is an asset for keeping your electronic units together without stacking them on top of each other. While a variety of glass, metal and plastic cabinets are available, make your own from wood, which is durable and straightforward to build. Once your AV cabinet is constructed you can leave it as is, or paint or stain the cabinet to match other elements of your room’s décor.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the two 5-foot long boards parallel on the ground. Measure and mark horizontal lines across the width of the boards every 10 inches from the top to the bottom of the 5-foot length. These five lines should look like rungs on a ladder.

    • 2

Stand the 5-foot boards on their long edge 2 feet apart, with the marked lines facing in. Place a 25.5-inch long board over each end of the long boards to form a rectangular box. Adjust the corners as needed to make the boards flush. Insert three evenly spaced screws through the 25.5-inch boards and into the ends of the 5-foot boards at each corner.

    • 3

Place a 24-inch board between the long boards and align it with opposite drawn lines on the 5-foot boards to form a shelf. Drive three evenly spaced screws through the 5-foot boards and into each end of the shelf to secure.

    • 4

Repeat Step 3 to add the four remaining shelves and align them with the marked lines until all of the shelves have been installed. Sand over the unit to smooth the wood and stand it upright to complete. Paint or stain the unit as desired.
