DIY Closet Entertainment Rack

An in-closet entertainment rack is a convenient place to store your DVDs and CDs because it will help keep your collection organized and out of the way. If you have limited space in your home or are simply unwilling to display your collection, building a rack for your closet is a simple solution. Using inexpensive building materials will save considerable money as opposed to purchasing from an online or in-store retailer.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height and width of the space in the closet where you intend to install your entertainment rack. You may choose to build your rack floor-to-ceiling or build a low rack from wall-to-wall along the floor. Choose the dimensions that best fit your closet and collection.

    • 2

Cut two pieces of 1/2-by-6-inch hardwood to the width you just determined in Step 1, using a circular saw. These boards will serve as the top and bottom panels for your entertainment rack. Use the height measurement, minus 1 inch, to cut two more pieces of 1/2-by-6-inch hardwood for the side panels.

    • 3

Arrange the four pieces of hardwood you just cut in a rectangular shape. Sandwich the side panels between the top and bottom panels, aligning the edges. Drive nails from a nail gun down through the top and bottom panels into the side panels to secure the frame.

    • 4

Measure and mark the position of your shelves along the side panels of the entertainment rack in pencil. DVD shelves should be about 8 inches tall and CD shelves about 6 inches tall.

    • 5

Cut your shelves out of 1/2-by-6-inch hardwood, using the circular saw. Each shelf should be cut to the width of the entertainment rack minus 1 inch to account for the thickness of the side panels.

    • 6

Slide the shelves into place where you made the pencil marks. Drive nails through the side panels into the thickness of each shelf to secure in place.

    • 7

Paint or stain your completed entertainment rack using interior-grade latex paint or wood stain. Allow the paint or stain to dry completely.

    • 8

Place the completed entertainment rack in the desired position inside your closet. The bottom panel should be flat against the floor and the back edges of the rack should be flush with the wall.

    • 9

Anchor the rack to the wall, if you choose, driving 2-inch wood screws at an angle through each of the four corners of the rack into the studs in the closet wall. You may need to use a stud finder to locate the wall studs.
