How to Build a Comic Book Cabinet

Collecting comic books, whether for antique value or as an avid reader, will mean your stash grows over time. While you can begin by storing your comics in cardboard comic boxes, sometimes called long boxes, eventually you’ll need a place for the boxes to go. The average DIY enthusiast can build a comic book cabinet for better organization and preservation of a collection.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand the two 16-by-36-inch pieces of plywood on their 36-inch long sides. Space the boards 26 inches apart. These pieces will be the sides of your cabinet.

    • 2

Hold the 16-by-27-inch piece on its 27-inch side and place it against the ends of the side boards to form a “U” shape. Align the two formed corners to make them flush. Insert three evenly spaced screws through the bottom and into the ends of the side boards on both sides.

    • 3

Place one of the 16-by-26-inch boards between the side boards to be your first shelf. Position the shelf 1 foot above the bottom board. Drive three evenly spaced screws through the side boards and into the shelf on both ends. Place and secure the second shelf of the same size inside the frame 1 foot above the first shelf.

    • 4

Lay one of the pieces of 28-by-36-inch plywood over the entire frame and shelves. Adjust the plywood so the top edge runs even with the top edge of the side boards. Insert a screw every 6 inches down the sides and bottom of the plywood to attach it to the frame. Flip the unit onto its back.

    • 5

Lay the other large 28-by-36-inch piece over the face of the cabinet. Align the sides and make the plywood flush along the top. Space your two hinges evenly apart along one side of the plywood. Attach the hinges to the framework and door with the screws provided.

Stand the cabinet so it rests on the bottom board. Place the 20-by-30-inch piece of plywood remaining over the top of the cabinet. Align the top board to overhang all four sides by 1.5 inches. Drive three evenly spaced screws down through the top and into the side boards to complete. Store up to nine comic book boxes inside the cabinet with three boxes on each shelf.
