How to Install a Light in a Hutch

Hutch lighting is a good way to set your storage cabinet apart, as the interior lighting can illuminate the contents to make them look their best. Circular lighting with an on-off switch and a standard outlet plug makes the easiest and most straightforward installation. This lighting can be installed with only a drill and a stapler, though care must be taken to ensure that the installation does not compromise the integrity of the electrical cord.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug the light in and position it within the hutch in a location that best illuminates the desired area. Mark the location of the screw attachment holes at this position.

Unplug the cord from the outlet. Trace the electrical cord back along the most convenient and unobtrusive path. Mark any spots in walls or shelves where a hole needs to be cut to allow easy access for the electrical cord.

    • 2

Drill holes in the shelves and boards of the hutch at the marked positions to allow passage of the electrical cord. Disconnect the cord from the light if that is a convenient option. Thread the cord through the holes so the plug is on the outside of the hutch and the cord reaches the hutch light. Reattach the cord to the light.

    • 3

Drill out the screw attachment holes for the light. Set the light up in its position. Attach the light in place by screwing 1/2-inch wood screws into each hole and tightening them completely.

    • 4

Stretch the electrical cord back from the light along the predetermined path through the shelf and walls of the hutch. Staple the cord to the wall every 12 inches and at each turn, being careful to keep the staples on either side of the cord to avoid piercing it.

Keep the cord tight and continue to staple it all the way out of the hutch. Plug the cord into the outlet and coil any extra cable in a convenient, out-of-the-way location such as behind the hutch.
