How to Choose the Best Organic Mattress

Organic mattresses are made from natural, sustainable materials, such as organic cotton, organic wool and natural tree latex. They are hypoallergenic, do not contain toxic materials and are resistant to dust mites, which makes them ideal for allergy and asthma sufferers as well as infants and children. Organic mattresses often cost more than conventional mattresses, but they are promise long lifespans.

Determine what size mattress you need. Not only should you know what bed size to purchase, but it's also important to keep in mind the height and weight of the person or people sleeping on it. The length of the mattress should be at least 6 inches longer than height of the tallest person sleeping on the bed. Your weight can affect how supportive the mattress feels after sleeping on it long-term; a lightweight child might prefer a softer mattress that conforms to her body, while a heavier adult may prefer a firmer mattress that better supports the back and spine.

Decide what materials you prefer in your mattress. Organic mattresses are often made using natural tree latex as the core. The latex is then covered with organic wool and wrapped in organic cotton. Some organic cotton and wool mattresses use standard inner springs instead of latex. Other materials include silk, hemp, bamboo, coconut fibers or horse hair. If you tend to "sleep hot," organic wool may be a good choice for you because it wicks away moisture to keep you feeling cooler. If you live in a hot or humid climate, latex and wool are good choices since they resist mold and mildew. Organic cotton is soft, smooth and often regarded as the most comfortable choice. It is effective at wicking moisture to the surface, though not as effective as wool. Organic cotton, however, is not fire-resistant, so be aware that many cotton mattresses are wrapped with organic wool, which is naturally fire- and dust-mite-resistant.

Evaluate the mattress for firmness. Back and stomach sleepers tend to prefer a firmer mattress for support, while side sleepers usually prefer softer mattresses.

Ask if the manufacturer offers a 30-day sleep warranty so you have time to evaluate your new mattress at home. A mattress that feels comfortable in the store may feel different when you're on it for eight hours.

Read labels carefully so you know if the mattress is entirely organic or a mixture of organic and synthetic materials. To be truly an "organic" mattress, 95 percent or more of the materials used must be of certified organic origin.
