How to Cut Memory Foam to Size

Cutting, or shaping, memory foam to size is easier than you think. Forget the utility knife or scissors, there's an easier way !
Read on for a simple way to carve memory foam, high density foam, or simple crafting foam. With these tips you can easily make furniture cushions, or trim down a memory foam mattress pad that may be too big for your bed.

Things You'll Need

  • Pencil
  • Paper for template
  • Marker
  • Memory foam, High Density foam, or craft foam
  • Tape measure
  • Electric carving knife

Instructions

      Measure the size memory foam that you need. The high density foam piece shown in the introduction is cut to 8 inches by 8 inches.

      Mark the measurements onto the paper you'll use as a template.

      If it's a memory foam mattress topper you need to cut, omit the template and mark the lines directly on the mattress pad. Use a yard stick or other straight edge to make a solid line to cut on.

      Place the template onto the memory foam piece, align it appropriately, and trace if applicable. Use a permanent fine tip marker for tracing purposes.

      Place your memory foam on a hard surface with the edge to be cut beyond the edge of the surface. Be sure to look beneath the foam to make sure you've cleared the edge of the surface you're cutting on.

      Use one hand to hold the foam firmly and the other to use the electric knife.

      Align your knife blade so it is will cut straight through the foam without an angle. Engage the blade and allow it to do the work. This is important ! Never force the knife through memory foam or it will result in a jagged, uneven cut edge.

      Take all precautions necessary when using an electric knife. Keep your fingers, cords, and other materials away when in use !

      If using this method for cutting a memory foam topper for your bed; try to use a table surface or workbench. Cut in small lengths, and readjust the foam, the knife, or yourself as needed to cut the straightest lines possible.
