Visit the nearest Sears store (see Resources) and look at the mattresses. Sears carries a number of different mattress brands, including Sealy, Sears-O-Pedic, Serta, Spring Air and Stearns & Foster.
Keep in mind as you look at the mattresses that mattress companies sell identical products using different names and different mattress covers. Prices will vary in the hundreds of dollars for the exact same product. All mattress companies purchase their coils from one of two places, so the quality of the coils is essentially the same from bed to bed. The number of coils used, foam and material make a different feel from bed to bed. The key to buying a mattress at Sears is to purchase the one that feels the best to you. To find the one that feels best lay on each of the beds for a few minutes and see which is the most comfortable.
Ask about the warranty on the mattress and the return policy. This will vary from mattress to mattress. Many mattresses come with 10 to 20 year warranties.
Ask the price of your chosen mattress. Mattresses often have a 50 percent discount during sales. If the mattress you want to buy at Sears is not on sale, ask the salesperson to check to see when the mattress will go on sale. Never pay the full retail price for a mattress.
